Non-chemical ways of controlling weeds
Whether you are a farmer, a gardener or a plant grower, weeds are a common problem. They compete for sunlight and nutrients, leaving less for your crop. Chemical weed killers leave toxins in the crop and affect other plants, animals and living organisms, so here are some natural alternatives.
1. Mulching with weed control discs
Mulching covers the soil with a layer of organic matter that smothers weeds and stops new seeds germinating. Coco fibre weed control discs are a 100% eco-friendly way to mulch, and they also protect plants from winter frost.
2. Weed control mats
Woven coconut fibre mats are laid on the soil before mulching. They block light from reaching the soil, which stops weeds growing, while still allowing air and moisture through.
3. Removing weeds by hand
Digging weeds out with a hoe or shovel is an effective spot treatment. Removing young weeds consistently stops them seeding, and regular digging weakens their roots.
4. Solarising with a plastic sheet
Covering a weedy area with a heavy plastic sheet works well in bright sunlight: the sheet traps heat and light, which kills the weeds.
Weed control mats and discs are easy to use and highly effective, making them one of the simplest natural options.
